The Untold Story of Latinos in America
In the midst of a historic fight over immigrant rights and the future of millions of Latino families, Latino Impact Media is proud to present Harvest of Empire, an award-winning documentary that takes an unflinching look at the connection between the long history of U.S. intervention in Latin America and the immigration crisis we face today.
In 2015, Harvest of Empire was chosen from among thousands of eligible films as one of 15 “Notable Videos for Adults” by the American Library Association. In 2013, the film received one of the most prestigious awards in Latino entertainment — the Imagen Award as Best Documentary for Film or Television. In 2013, Harvest of Empire was also named winner of the ABC News Source Award from the International Documentary Association. During the same year, the film was recognized at the Cine Golden Eagle Awards as Best Documentary, and Best Independent Film. Here are some of the reviews for the film:
Elizabeth Weitzman, N.Y. Daily News — “Four Stars! In an era of anti-immigrant fervor, this sobering and much-needed look at Latino migration is built on an undeniably optimistic premise: that once Americans have accurate facts, ‘they rarely allow injustices to stand.’”
Stephanie Merry, Washington Post — “Pick of the Week! For all the talk about immigration, rarely does the conversation veer into why so many Latinos have come to the United States. Harvest of Empire attempts to fill in the gaps, and the reasons don’t include some naive notion about streets being paved with gold…Raises a very important moral question, and one that rarely enters the immigration debate: If America is responsible for destabilizing a country, what is our role when the country’s citizens suffer as a result?”
Rachel Saltz, N.Y. Times — “Harvest of Empire has a journalistic pedigree and a punch that comes from political advocacy…The filmmakers retain a touching faith that most Americans won’t tolerate injustice when they know about it. This film is meant to teach them.”
Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter — “Makes the devastating case that intervention by both the U.S. government and multinational corporations has been directly or indirectly partly responsible for much of the mass influx of immigrants from Latin America…With the immigration debate currently consuming much of the current political climate, there’s no better time for the release of Harvest of Empire.”
Peter Hartlaub, S.F. Chronicle — “Directors Peter Getzels and Eduardo López wisely strip their argument of passion, and pile on history and facts to highlight the U.S. role in the surge of immigrants crossing the border in the past century.”
